A Gospel Primer: Obey
Dear Redemption City Family,
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, it is very common in the church to think the gospel is only for non-Christians. We know the gospel is the means by which we are saved, but once saved, we tend to believe our growth is dependent upon our hard work and obedience. Do better. Try harder. Read more. Pray longer.
If we lack an understanding of how the gospel is the means by which we also grow as a Christian, then our strivings will do one of two things: 1) make us discouraged, feeling as if growing in godliness is impossible because we can’t do what we know we ought, or 2) make us self-righteous, causing us to think we’ve somehow figured it out and are sufficient for our own growth.
However, both ways lead us to a dead end road, further from Christ and from the way of the gospel.
Why do we need the gospel? Because without it our lives remain caught between these two opposite sides of the spectrum (discouragement and apathy on one end, and self-righteousness and moralism on the other). Yet, when we grasp the glory of Jesus, who he is and what he has done on our behalf, it becomes the sustaining inspiration that transforms our lives. It’s the kind of grace that changes people from the inside out.
Isaiah was transformed by seeing Jesus in the temple.
Peter was transformed by seeing Jesus after his resurrection.
Paul was transformed when he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus.
These men were changed when they saw the glory of Jesus.
Join us tomorrow as we learn what it means for the gospel to change our hearts and grant us the ability to obey God.
Praying for you,
